Social Media Adds Growth To Plastic Surgery Numbers

NEW YORK (JUNE 10, 2013) –According to recent information released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Facebook, the largest social media network in the world, has helped contribute to a substantial growth in cosmetic plastic surgery across the United States. Hoping to improve the look of their profile photos, a greater number of users are reaching out to plastic surgeons.

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s (AAFPRS) annual poll of member surgeons has indicated that roughly 42% of Americans are obtaining advice and information regarding plastic surgery directly from Facebook and social networking sites rather than from friends. This is a substantial increase from 29% a few years ago.

Doctors like New York-based, cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg have introduced a Facebook Cosmetic Surgery package that includes computer imaging to allow patients to see what they will look like in Facebook photos following various procedures.

“In the vast and growing world of social media, we are now able to provide cosmetic surgery results that will enhance an individual’s appearance on a Facebook profile picture,” says Greenberg. “Millions of users around the world interact with each other daily. Today patients care as much or perhaps even more about how they look on social media than they do when they meet someone in person.”

Cosmetic plastic surgeons in the U.S. are continuing to build a presence on social media, mostly to brand themselves among the 1 billion-plus active Facebook users around the world. Facebook is currently the largest social networking site, and it was the most used mobile app across iOS and Android devices in the United States in 2012, according to recent data described by various sources including CNN.

“More patients want to look good on the Internet for perspective employers who are likely going to check them out online before hiring them,” Greenberg said. “Obviously, singles who join dating sites and people who reconnect with old acquaintances want the same effect for personal reasons.”
