What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck improves the way your abdominal area looks. The procedure is limited to removing the skin above the pubic area, accompanied by additional fat removal using liposuction. This is a less invasive procedure because it focuses on the skin between the belly button and the pubic bone.

What Makes You a Good Candidate?

A good candidate for a mini tummy tuck will:

  • Have minimal to moderate skin redundancy
  • Have a small amount of abdominal fat
  • Have minor to moderate muscle flaccidity

How Is This Procedure Done?

In a mini-abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, the surgeon starts by aspirating the abdominal fat, then  removes the excess skin above the pubic area, and, in cases of muscle flaccidity, the medial part of the abdominal skin is also removed. Finally, the skin is sutured, with the navel’s original position preserved. This surgery lasts between one and three hours. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis and may require only local anesthesia.

How About the Recovery?

After the surgery, you should take long-duration effect local anesthetics as prescribed. You should plan on taking them for seven to ten days after the surgery, and remember to take it easy and follow the doctor’s instructions as to your care. Sutures are removed within two weeks. Most patients resume light activity in about two days and go back to more strenuous exercise in about a month. Most return to work in one to three weeks.

Compression

An elastic compression garment must be used for about two to three weeks after the surgery to keep the area tight while healing takes place. The compression also helps improve circulation and minimize swelling. Tighter compression is recommended for the first couple of weeks following surgery and looser compression for up to eight weeks during long-term recovery.

Exercise

Minor abdominal exercises, such as light crunches, can aid in speeding up the recovery and reduce stiffness. You should start walking to begin getting back in shape. Strenuous exercise (like running or any heavy lifting) should be avoided for at least six weeks.

What Are the Results?

The results of a mini tummy tuck will last many years unless you gain weight or become pregnant.
