3 Reasons to Get Microneedling

Aging—no matter how gracefully done, brings with it all manner of skin conditions and ailments that can be avoided through the proper treatments and skilled application of those treatments. At Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery, we know first hand how the right treatment and an experienced professional produce phenomenal results. Microneedling is no exception.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling—also known as collagen induction therapy, is a rejuvenating skin treatment. A device that resembles a roller, a microneedle stamping device, is used to create microscopic puncture wounds on the surface layers of skin. The procedure has been around since 1995 or so but has increased in popularity in the past few years because of the many ways that other treatments can be synergistically used with microneedling. Here are 3 reasons why you should get microneedling done.

1 – If You Have Acne or Acne Scars

Acne is a commonly experienced skin condition. It’s not pleasant to have but everyone can relate to having pimples or inflammation on their face at one point. The problem occurs when it persists beyond adolescence and when the acne is severe enough to be consistently present or you are experiencing large and painful pimples.

It’s bad enough to suffer through this, but when many large acne blemishes go away, they often leave scars regardless of whether you popped the pimple or not. This has truly awful effects on self-perception and enjoyment of life. No one should have to go through life constantly ashamed to show their face or look in a mirror and be reminded of their prior acne flare-ups. In our modern age, technology has accomplished so much. Surely something can be done about such a simple problem, right?

Of course! Microneedling is one of the methods in which acne scarring and other blemishes can be reduced or practically eliminated.

2 – It Will Restore Elasticity To Your Skin

When you age, everything tends to sag as it loses the firmness and elasticity it once had to not only maintain shape but be flexible. The reason why microneedling is technically called collagen induction therapy is that the needling treatment’s primary function is to stimulate the production of collagen. This occurs because the superficial wounds created through the treatment engage the body’s healing process which in turn leads to renewed collagen production.

As we age, our production of collagen slows down. Collagen is a structural protein that gives our skin shape and elasticity. The microneedling process can continually stimulate this production to make up for some of that lost ability. In a sense, it’s very much similar to lifting weights. Some people naturally put on muscle easily, but everyone can lift weights—which creates tears in the muscles, to stimulate muscle growth that isn’t “naturally” occurring. In reality, both of these examples are still natural because at the end of the day, you’re just stimulating your body’s natural healing response to provide anti-aging benefits!

3 – Microneedling Can Be Combined With PRP and Other Treatments

As we established, the microneedling procedure will create tiny puncture wounds in your skin. Apart from the benefits discussed that are gained from this procedure, another interesting effect of this treatment is that those microscopic wounds can allow for other treatments to penetrate deeper into the skin.

For example, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is obtained by spinning your blood in a centrifuge to separate out the white blood cells and concentrate them into a PRP solution. White blood cells are responsible for protecting the body against foreign invaders and as a result, have healing properties. When you combine PRP with microneedling, you get a deeply restorative effect on the skin from the benefits of the microneedling, as well as the healing effects of the PRP.

Another example of this synergy is the hair restoration medication minoxidil. The microneedling process allows for deeper penetration of minoxidil on the scalp which will trigger greater hair follicle growth.
