Buff Your Way to Better Skin With Microdermabrasion!

As we age, our skin can accumulate all kinds of markings, blemishes, scars, and general age-related wear and tear. At Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery, we’re highly experienced in all procedures both invasive and non-invasive. It’s a misconception that many people believe that you can only get results through undergoing more intensive procedures such as the facelift, liposuction, or many others. While those procedures have different intentions than say, microdermabrasion, it’s this idea that to get great aesthetic results you have to go under or have surgery performed.

Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery Aesthetic Principles

We believe that all of the procedures we perform is just a tool in our toolbelt. You may require liposuction, or maybe you don’t. Perhaps a mini-tummy tuck would be better for your needs and would boast a better recovery time. That can’t be determined through reading alone, which is why we always recommend that you book an appointment with us for a consultation where Dr. Greenberg or one of our highly qualified staff can offer their professional insights on what procedure would be best for you.

What is Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that is intended to produce an exfoliating effect on the skin.

Throughout the day, dirt, oils, various products or makeup will all collect on the surface of your skin and block your pores. The body has a natural exfoliating mechanism but its ability to do so diminishes as we age. This means that more often than not, our skin is not looking its best because it is constantly appearing duller due to dead skin or other things that collect on top.

As the skin’s pores become clogged it can result in various skin issues such as acne, inflammation, redness and swelling, etc. This is compounded by the fact that on average, the body regenerates skin cells every 27 days or so. As we said above, our ability to exfoliate (shed the dead skin) slows down over time often leaving us with rough, dry skin in certain parts of our face.

Microdermabrasion is an abrasive procedure that can buff these dead layers off of your face. This is accomplished by using a handheld device or a diamond-tipped wand to buff microscopic crystals over the treatment area. The procedure only takes about 30 minutes to perform and the results are incredible! Depending on the severity of your skin issues, sometimes follow up procedures are necessary—but this would be something discussed with you beforehand as we never want our patients to feel like they are in the dark about their treatment timeline or their expectations of results.

Is Microdermabrasion Right for Me?

  • Dull skin
  • Sun damage
  • Acne and acne-related scarring
  • Age spots
  • Blackheads
  • Hyperpigmentation (discoloring)
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores

All of these skin issues are very receptive to microdermabrasion treatment, particularly enlarged pores which are caused by age, sun damage, and the use of comedogenic products.

Do I Need To Prepare for Treatment Before or After?

No, one of the chief benefits of this procedure is that it requires no preparation and there is little to no downtime involved. Some patients will report some tenderness of the skin after the procedure but this generally does not last beyond a day. For all intents and purposes, you should be able to resume daily activities immediately.

Additional Benefits of Microdermabrasion

The primary reason to get this procedure is for the abrasive benefits that it brings. However, there are some additional effects of microdermabrasion that are also very useful.

Microdermabrasion brings many circulatory benefits to your skin by improving blood flow. As you may know, improved blood flow brings better nutrient and oxygen delivery which will rejuvenate the skin and keep it healthy.

Because things such as inflammation and skin cell buildup create an environment which can contribute greatly towards enlarged pore size. Microdermabrasion can help clear and reduce pore size. This was covered already, but what many people fail to realize is that since the skin is fresh and free of that dead outer layer, it means that it much more readily receives product. This is great as not only does it mean you’ll spend less money on product since it will go a longer way, but you’ll avoid the overapplication of facial products which can contribute to pore-clogging product buildup!
