Everything You Need To Know About Breast Augmentation

How do I choose my implant size?

The size you choose is a very personal decision, but there are several factors involved that will determine the size, including the elasticity of your skin, how much breast tissue you have, and your body type. In your private consultation, Dr. Greenberg will examine all of these factors and help you decide on the perfect sizefor you.

What are implants made of?

Dr. Greenberg offers the two different types of breast implants: silicone shells filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel. Depending on your individual body type, he will place the implants either behind each breast, under the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle.

An advantage of saline breast implants is that, if ruptured, the saline (salt solution) is dissolved by the body. However, in small-breasted or reconstructive patients, saline breast implants may appear less natural. This is especially important for very thin women who have little breast tissue to cover the implant, or for women who have a breast injury or need breast reconstruction.

Silicone gel-filled breast implants may provide a more natural feel and is the implant choice of most of Dr. Greenberg’s patients. After many years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved this type of implant for breast augmentation surgery. We are proud to offer patients the option of silicone gel-filled breast implants.

How safe are breast implants?

Dr. Greenberg has performed many breast augmentations, with very safe and satisfying results. Of course, there are risks involved in any procedure, but to avoid any complications and ensure that you’re happy with your results, every patient comes back for a post-op appointment the day after your surgery, and then periodic visits as needed.

Before your procedure, you will be asked to seek medical clearance from your regular doctor to make sure that you are physically prepared for your surgery. If you have untreated breast cancer or infection, are under 18 years of age, or are pregnant or nursing, you will not be eligible for a breast augmentation.

How will my implants look and feel after surgery?

Some discoloration and swelling will occur initially after the procedure, but this will disappear quickly. Most residual swelling will resolve within a month.

After recovery, many women equate the feel of their breast implants to that of a young girl with healthy, firm breasts. Saline breast implants feel a bit firmer (both inside and outside the body), while silicone gel breast implants are the softer, and more natural feeling implant.

Do I have to be put under for my surgery?

Yes. Most patients are put under general anesthesia before a breast augmentation.

What is the recovery time?

Dr. Greenberg understands that in today’s world, there’s no time to be wasted lying in bed recovering, so he performs a mini-incision rapid-recovery breast augmentation, through which most patients (over 90{6185f9fd976fcd6062d90727d31c06bb37ace863a77be9111580b516dc262aca}) will be back to their normal routine in 24 hours, with the exception of strenuous exercise. Patients will also experience less pain, bruising and scarring.Breast augmentation is considered an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to go home the same day as your surgery.

Where will my incisions be?

To minimize the visibility of scars, Dr. Greenberg will make the incision in one of these four inconspicuous locations: in the armpit, in the crease on the underside of the breast, around the areola (the dark skin around the nipple), or through the belly button. The breast is then lifted, creating a pocket into which he inserts the implants.

Will there be scarring?

Scars are a part of the breast augmentation process. Fortunately, breast augmentation and breast lift scars, regardless of where they are located, tend to heal extremely well. Scars are usually small and inconspicuous, and Dr. Greenberg takes great care to ensure the scar is as unnoticeable as possible.

Are breast implants permanent?

You should have long-lasting results from your breast augmentation. Dr. Greenberg has many years of expert knowledge and experience, which has helped patients enjoy the youthful feel of their breasts for many years after their procedure.

However, gravity as well as the natural effects of aging will eventually alter the shape and size of virtually every woman’s breasts. If, after a number of years, you decide you’d like to improve the appearance of your breasts, Dr. Greenberg can also perform a breast lift procedure to restore their youthful contour for you.

Can I breast-feed after receiving breast implants?

You will most likely be able to breastfeed after the procedure, but it may depend on the kind of surgery you had and the type of incisions required. If you’re pregnant or plan on having children in the future, you should discuss your intentions and any concerns with Dr. Greenberg
