ABOUT Fat Transfer

Improve the Contours and Volume of Buttocks with a Fat Transfer Procedure

A fat transfer performed by Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S at his offices serving Long IslandNY, Manhattan, NY, and the greater New York City area, can fill an area of your body with volume that looks and feels natural. This simple procedure can provide significant body contouring for an enhanced figure.

What Is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is a simple and safe method primarily used for filling in volume in areas such as the face or buttocks. Dr. Greenberg has many years of experience and training in fat transfer surgery.

During fat transfer surgery fat cells are transferred from one area of the body to another. The preferred method for performing buttock augmentation is fat transfer, the use of the patient’s own body fat to reshape the butt. Fat injection achieves a more natural result, has a lower risk of infection, and also contours the areas around the buttocks to enhance the overall effect. Since fat transfer uses your body’s own tissues, generally, the body does not reject the cells. The result of fat transfer surgery is a soft and natural look.

Planning Your Treatment

Dr. Greenberg will meet with you at either his New York City or Long Island offices and discuss the details of the fat transfer procedure. Upon examination, he will see if you are a good fat transfer candidate. Since fat transfers are done in small amounts at a time, Dr. Greenberg may suggest spreading out your fat transfer procedures over several treatments. During your consultation you can discuss the cost of treatment and the results you may be able to achieve.

What to Expect From the Procedure

Fat transfer surgery is done at one of Dr. Greenberg’s state-of-the-art, fully accredited ambulatory surgery centers in either Manhattan or on Long Island. In most patients, the fat is obtained from the buttocks, thighs, or abdomen in a process similar to liposuction. Local anesthesia is used and only a small incision or puncture is required. Once the fat is harvested, excess oils and fluids are removed. The fat is then re-injected into the desired area through a tiny tube. Fat transfer surgery lasts one to three hours.

How Long Is the Recovery?

Fat transfer incisions and punctures are barely noticeable. You may experience swelling, bruising and numbness in the incision or puncture areas during your recovery. Most patients can return to work within seven days after the fat transfer surgery and can resume most normal activities in about two weeks. Since some fat is reabsorbed into the body, touch-up fat transfers at a later date may be necessary. Fat transfer results vary from person to person but the corrections generally last several years or more.

Adding more volume and contours to specific areas of your body can give you the self-confidence to wear more of the clothes you desire, and show off more of your body’s natural curves.

Take Measures to Ensure a Speedy Fat Transfer Recovery

Fat Transfer Recovery
Many people have benefitted from fat transfer surgery, which utilizes your own tissue to add volume to areas such as the buttocks. Although the procedure is less invasive than other body contouring methods, such as implants, it is still considered intensive and will require you to take some time at home to recover. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg can discuss fat transfer recovery with you at his Long Island, New York-area practice. Total recovery takes about two weeks. Dr. Greenberg will provide all the information you need to recover quickly and safely, and is available to answer any questions and concerns during your recovery period.

Immediate After Surgery
In addition to scheduling time away from work and regular activities, we recommend patients make a few basic preparations around the house before their surgery in order to remain comfortable. The fat transfer proceduretakes about one to three hours to perform. We may monitor your condition for a few hours afterwards so the anesthesia can begin wearing off and Dr. Greenberg can ensure your condition is stable.

Although fat transfer recovery is relatively easy in comparison to some other cosmetic surgeries, it is very important that you take care of yourself and rest to ensure proper healing.

You will need to have an open schedule so you can rest for the remainder of the day, and you will need someone to drive you home since you will be groggy. Dr. Greenberg will also provide instructions on how to minimize discomfort and identify any complications if they arise.

The Following Weeks
Typically, we recommend that you take the first week to simply rest, after which time you can consider returning to work. Be sure to notify your employer that you are recovering from surgery, and that you will need to avoid strenuous tasks for another week following your return. After two weeks, you should be able to resume normal activities. Dr. Greenberg will be available to answer concerns during this time, and may schedule additional visits to check on your progress.

Tips for a Speedy Recovery
The first and most essential tip for healing as quickly as possible is to get all the sleep your body needs. Some patients report feeling anxious to return to basic activities around the house during their recovery. Cleaning the house and preparing meals ahead of time can lessen this temptation, and allow you to retain your independence during healing.

Patients will also need to follow basic aftercare tips which usually include directions on replacing bandages and cleaning the surgical area. You will need to avoid putting too much pressure on your surgical site, especially if you underwent Brazilian butt lift, and you should make necessary preparations so you can remain comfortable while you rest.
