What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction (lipoplasty) is a procedure that contours the body by removing unwanted fat and inches from the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, and chin. Liposuction is not a replacement for diet or exercise, but it helps patients get rid of stubborn areas that do not respond to other weight loss methods. With weight loss, the fat cells in the body only shrink – they do not disappear. Liposuction actually removes the fat cells from your body.

Dr. Greenberg utilizes a unique combination of tumescent liposuction, along with external ultrasound and power-assisted liposuction. Used in conjunction, these methods offer the patient smoother contours, quick recovery, and minimal pain and bruising. There will be a noticeable difference immediately after liposuction, and your new contours will remain permanent as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

If you gain weight after liposuction, it will distribute itself evenly throughout the body and will not settle in the same problem areas. There are myriad benefits of liposuction that patients enjoy following their procedure. For patients interested in non-surgical treatments to reduce body fat, SculpSure® may be more appropriate. Our team can discuss all your options with you during an in-depth consultation.

What is Smart Lipo?

Smart lipo removes fat cells from the body, and it is one of the newest technologies offered by Dr. Greenberg. Smart lipo is virtually painless and highly effective at removing unwanted body fat using laser technology that can differentiate between fat cells and other tissues. Once the smart lipo laser dissolves fat cells, they are simply suctioned out of the body. Because of the innovative technology behind smart lipo, there is often less scarring and a faster recovery time than with traditional liposuction.

Liposuction or Smart Lipo Consultation

Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S takes a great deal of time explaining liposuction options and procedures to his patients. He will examine you to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, as well as show you preoperative and post-operative pictures of liposuction patients.

Dr. Greenberg will evaluate the elasticity of your skin, and he will give you his honest professional opinion on how to best improve your body contours. The honesty, rapport, and trust that is established at the initial consultation is extremely important.

Dr. Greenberg will see you for your consultation at one of his two state-of-the-art cosmetic surgery centers in Manhattan or Long Island. You can discuss the costs of the procedure at this time.

Liposuction Surgery

Before undergoing liposuction, you will be provided with pre-operative instructions, and the doctor will answer any questions you may have about recovery or potential complications.

With weight loss, the fat cells in the body only shrink – they do not disappear. Liposuction actually removes the fat cells from your body.

Liposuction incisions are usually not conspicuous, and are often hidden in skin creases. Your procedure will be performed in Dr. Greenberg’s fully licensed ambulatory center. On the day of your surgery, Dr. Greenberg will re-evaluate you, and together, you will decide exactly which areas will be treated.

The liposuction procedure can take anywhere from one hour to three hours, depending on what is being done. You will then be able to rest in our recovery room until you are ready to go home.

Eliminate Stubborn Fat and Tighten Loose Skin with SmartLipo™

SmartLipo™ is an advanced form of liposuction performed at our Manhattan, NYC, facility. It uses laser technology to effectively target stubborn fat cells that are difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise. Compared to traditional liposuction, this technique promotes skin tightening, reduces discomfort, and speeds healing time. To perform SmartLipo™, Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg will insert a single laser fiber into the body through a small cannula (tube). This state-of-the-art cosmetic technology will tone and tighten the skin and remove stubborn fat cells, giving your body an aesthetically pleasing and more youthful appearance.

What to Expect During SmartLipo™

As one of the latest technologies performed at Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery, SmartLipo™ is a minimally invasive procedure that removes excess fat from various parts of the body. Treatment areas may include:

  • Arms
  • Male breasts
  • Stomach and abdomen
  • Hips and backside
  • Back
  • Thighs

With SmartLipo™, Dr. Greenberg will first administer a local anesthetic and then insert the cannula containing a laser fiber into the targeted area(s). This tiny tube will minimize the effect on the surrounding tissue as the laser’s energy breaks down and drains away fat cells. Unlike traditional liposuction, SmartLipo™ ensures minimal scarring and reduces bleeding and bruising by sealing off blood vessels as it works. This virtually painless procedure takes less than an hour for each area, and involves a much faster recovery than traditional liposuction.

This state-of-the-art cosmetic technology will tone and tighten the skin and remove stubborn fat cells, giving your body an aesthetically pleasing and more youthful appearance.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Greenberg will meet with you to discuss your overall cosmetic goals and the options available with SmartLipo™ to make sure it is a good solution for you.

Are You a Candidate for SmartLipo™?

This procedure is not considered a weight loss treatment. It is appropriate for patients who are within a healthy weight range and exercise regularly. If you are in good physical condition, but struggling with excess fat and skin in certain areas, SmartLipo™ may be right for you.

Please inform Dr. Greenberg about your full medical history and any pre-existing medical issues during your consultation so he can customize your procedure to meet your needs. This treatment may not be a good option if you:

  • Are pregnant and/or nursing
  • Smoke or drink alcohol
  • Have a body-mass index (BMI) that falls into the obese range
  • Take blood thinners
  • Suffer from diabetes, heart issues, or seizure disorders

If you are interested in a non-surgical form of reducing body fat, our team can suggest other procedures such as revolutionary SculpSure®.

Recovery and Benefits of SmartLipo™

SmartLipo™ is one of the safest and most effective cosmetic procedures performed at Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery. It quickly reverses the signs of aging with minimal discomfort. One of the greatest benefits SmartLipo™ offers is a shorter recovery with very little postoperative discomfort. In most cases, recovery typically lasts one to two days, with minor to moderate bruising and swelling.

You should expect to take at least two days off work to rest, and avoid strenuous activity. During your recovery, eat a low-sodium diet, take medications as directed, and ice regularly to minimize any swelling. You will notice a slimmer, tighter, smoother, and more contoured figure almost immediately, and results will improve within a few months after surgery.

Are You a Candidate for Liposuction?

While liposuction is one of the most well-known cosmetic surgeries available, you may be unsure whether the procedure is right for you. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg can help you determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction. At his Long Island, NY, practice, Dr. Greenberg and his team will walk you through the details of the procedure and the factors that make a good candidate, including skin elasticity, overall health, and anticipated expectations. To learn whether liposuction is right for you, contact us today.

Benefits and Limitations

Ideally, liposuction is used to remove localized deposits of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise. These deposits are typically located in the neck, upper arms or armpits, chest, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, and ankles. In some cases, liposuction is used to shape facial features, particularly chubby cheeks or jowls.

While one benefit of liposuction is its powerful ability to sculpt your body’s contours, it is not intended as a treatment for obesity, and cannot significantly reduce a patient’s weight. The procedure produces the best results when used to refine a patient’s shape. It cannot cause a significant drop in clothing size, nor can it replace exercise or diet.

Candidacy Factors

Liposuction candidates should be relatively fit, and within 30 percent of their ideal weight. The effects of the procedure are permanent, as long as your weight does not fluctuate. Patients should not plan to lose a significant amount of weight, or become pregnant after surgery. Any weight loss should occur prior to liposuction.

Having firm, elastic skin also plays a role in the success of liposuction. The more elastic your skin, the more likely your skin will shrink into place after liposuction and leave you with smooth, natural-looking results. Since skin elasticity often reduces with age, older patients may not experience optimal or desired results. However, many patients with reduced skin elasticity are satisfied with their results.

Dr. Greenberg will guide you through the potential outcomes of various liposuction strategies, to ensure that you have realistic expectations for the procedure.

As with all surgical procedures, pre-existing health issues can undermine results and increase the risk of complications. Patients who suffer from illnesses or medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiac arrhythmias, or seizure disorders could experience impaired healing.

Since the effects of smoking can significantly affect your ability to heal, non-smokers are at a much lower risk of developing complications. Furthermore, if you take any medications that increase the risk of bleeding such as aspirin or NSAIDs, you may need to stop taking them for a specified amount of time prior to your surgery. Dr. Greenberg will review and discuss your medications with you.

Evaluating Your Candidacy

During your initial consultation, Dr. Greenberg will determine your candidacy based on a number of factors, including your medical history, skin elasticity, and overall treatment goals. He will guide you through the potential outcomes of various liposuction strategies, to ensure that you have realistic expectations for the procedure. If liposuction is not the best match for your goals, Dr. Greenberg may recommend alternative cosmetic procedures, such as bariatric surgery or a tummy tuck.

Explore the Benefits of Liposuction

Genetics, aging, and the effects of pregnancy can lead to frustration over problem areas. Even with consistent diet and exercise, excess fat can persist and detract from your appearance. Liposuction is a safe and effective procedure that has allowed millions of patients to improve their figures by precisely targeting and removing these hard-to-eliminate pockets of fat. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg has used his surgical skill and experience to provide the remarkable benefits of liposuction to a diverse range of patients in Long Island, NY. To learn more about how you can benefit from a liposuction procedure, contact our office to schedule a visit.

Enhanced Appearance and Confidence

Liposuction is an incredibly popular cosmetic treatment designed to help eliminate unwanted pockets of fat that have accumulated disproportionately around the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck, or nearly anywhere throughout the body. During the procedure, Dr. Greenberg will make a series of small incisions in the treatment area. He will insert a thin tube, called a cannula, to gently break up and suction out unwanted fat cells. Once he has achieved your desired results, the incisions will be carefully closed.

By removing stubborn fat from these areas, liposuction can help you achieve smooth and toned body contours, enhancing your aesthetic appeal. After undergoing treatment, patients will often experience boosted confidence simply because their clothes fit better. Liposuction patients can even begin to participate in activities that they had previously avoided because of concern over their appearance.

Additional Benefits

In addition to improving your appearance, fat removal through liposuction can also help provide benefits to your overall health. For many patients, liposuction can reflect a commitment to a healthier, more active lifestyle. After achieving improved body contours, many patients become motivated to help maintain results through strict diet and exercise regimes. Liposuction can also be used as a less invasive form of breast reduction surgery, helping women alleviate back and neck pain caused by the weight of overly large breasts. With proper care, your liposuction results can last for many years to come.

Other Considerations

It is important to understand that liposuction can only remove small, localized concentrations of fat, and it is not intended to help you lose weight or eliminate stretch marks or cellulite from the skin. If you are significantly overweight, weight loss through diet and exercise or bariatric procedures — such as gastric bypass surgery — is likely more appropriate. Ideal liposuction candidates are those who are maintaining a relatively healthy weight and seeking subtle fat removal and body contouring. Patients should understand that the full aesthetic benefits of liposuction may not be visible for up to six months, as the skin needs time to tighten over the treated area.

If you are interested in transforming your proportions with liposuction, Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery is an excellent choice. The author of A Little Nip, A Little Tuck, Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg is a nationally respected expert on surgical cosmetic enhancements and body sculpting. Dr. Greenberg performs customized body contouring using an advanced liposuction procedure. His techniques for his Long Island, NY-area patients provide an optimal result with minimal discomfort and reduced recovery time.

Liposuction can be a great option for patients with stubborn pockets of fat that have not responded to diet or exercise.

Our Approach to Liposuction

The first step in your liposuction treatment is a consultation with Dr. Greenberg, who will assess your needs and cosmetic goals and provide personalized recommendations. Dr. Greenberg offers highly individualized treatments, but in many cases, recommends advanced SmartLipo™ for his patients.

Like traditional liposuction, SmartLipo™ can remove fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, chin, and other trouble spots. This laser technique provides additional skin tightening and other benefits, including a shorter recovery time.

The Procedure

Our liposuction procedures take place in Dr. Greenberg’s office or in one of our state-of-the-art outpatient surgical centers. With today’s advanced techniques, general anesthesia is not needed for most types of liposuction, but sedation options are always available.

The procedure begins with the creation of small incisions to provide access to the targeted treatment area. These incisions provide an entry point for the thin cannula (tube) that will be inserted for fat removal.

Dr. Greenberg’s liposuction techniques provide an optimal result with minimal discomfort and reduced recovery time.

For traditional tumescent liposuction, a diluted solution of anesthesia is first injected. This mix of lidocaine and epinephrine causes fat cells to swell and firm, which minimizes bleeding and discomfort in the treatment area. Dr. Greenberg will then suction unwanted fat through the cannula. If you are receiving fat transfer to the face or body, the fat cells will be purified, before being injected into the target area.

The SmartLipo™ process differs slightly, as it utilizes the added benefit of power-generated laser heat. The energy is dispersed through a laser inside the cannula, which works to soften and liquefy fat. This facilitates easier fat removal and requires less manipulation, which translates to reduced pre-operative bruising. The laser also causes blood vessels to coagulate to minimize bleeding and bruising. Lastly, the beam stimulates collagen and elastin production, which provides skin-tightening benefits.

After targeted fat is removed, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape. At that time, you will be fitted with compression garments that can facilitate healing. These help to reduce swelling and promote natural-looking contours. The entire procedure will generally take one to three hours, depending upon the method and extent of treatment.

Aftercare and Recovery

Traditional liposuction patients should wear compression garments for several weeks and curtail strenuous activities for one to two weeks. Any discomfort during the initial recovery period is generally manageable with pain medication prescribed by Dr. Greenberg. SmartLipo™ patients will generally have an easier recovery, wear the garments for less time, and can expect to return to activities in a matter of days.

Liposuction patients can enjoy immediate body contouring results with continued improvement in the following months. Some swelling may continue for a few weeks.

Learn About the Stages of Liposuction Recovery

The success of your liposuction procedure can depend greatly on your recovery period. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg will thoroughly outline the different stages of liposuction recovery at his Long Island, NY, practice and make recommendations for your particular after-care. Contact us today to learn how we can help ensure a safe and comfortable recovery after your liposuction procedure.

Your Recovery: The First Week

In most cases, patients recover quickly from liposuction and can return to their normal routine within one to two weeks. However, your specific recovery will depend greatly on how much fat tissue is removed and where it is taken from. For this reason, it is important to follow Dr. Greenberg’s instructions closely, as he will recommend appropriate after-care tailored to your needs.

Since liposuction is an outpatient procedure, patients can usually return home shortly afterward. The type of anesthesia you receive determines how long you will have to wait. If you receive general anesthesia, you will have to remain under our care for one to three hours. If you receive local anesthesia, you will most likely be allowed to leave within an hour.

In most cases, patients recover quickly from liposuction and can return to their normal routine within one to two weeks.

After your procedure, you will be provided with elastic bandages or a compression garment to use on the treatment site. This helps control swelling during your recovery and compresses the skin to your new body contours. You will be asked to wear the garment for at least a few days, however, some patients wear the garment for a few weeks.

In some cases, we may place tubes at the incision site, to help remove excess blood and fluid. These drains will need be cleaned once a day. If they fill quickly, you should contact our office as soon as possible. The drains are typically removed after the first few days.

You should avoid extensive bed rest during your recovery. The longer you remain sedentary, the greater the chance a blood clot can form. To prevent this complication, be sure to walk regularly around the house or around the block.

You will need to visit the office for a follow-up appointment during the first week of your surgery, so that we may monitor your progress.

Short- and Long-term Care

When you can return to your regular routine depends on the extent of your procedure and how much physical labor you do. If you work a desk job, you will likely be able to return to work within a few days.

The more physical your duties, the longer you should wait to return to work. While patients should perform some exercise during the first few days, activity should be very moderate. In most cases, you can resume normal activities after two weeks.

During the first few weeks, it is important to avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time, whether you are at work or traveling by car or airplane. Like extensive bed rest, sitting for too long can increase your chance of developing blood clots in your legs.

You will likely experience a number of side effects as your body continues to recover. Patients can expect bruising, swelling, and soreness for at least one to two weeks. Your skin may sag a little around the treatment site, but it should return to normal within six months

Learn How To Reduce Liposuction Complications

Liposuction surgery can bring many benefits, such as greater self-esteem and more attractive contours. But just as with all surgeries, there are risks associated with liposuction. While such risks are unavoidable parts of surgery, Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg will ensure that you understand these risks, and that you are prepared for any liposuction complications. Contact Dr. Greenberg’s Long Island, NY, practice to schedule your personal consultation today.

Side Effects

Understanding the difference between expected side effects and potential complications is important. The earlier you are able to recognize warning signs, the quicker you can reach out for help. Some normal side effects that can occur after liposuction include:

  • Bruising: Tender, discolored patches of skin are especially common after any surgery. While uncomfortable, most bruises heal completely within a month of the procedure.
  • Swelling: This accumulation of fluid is the body’s reaction to a loss of tissue. Often, patients notice swelling in their ankles and feet, in addition to swelling at the treatment site.
  • Uneven skin texture: As your skin adjusts to the sudden loss of fat deposits, you may notice an uneven or lumpy texture over the treatment site. In general, this bumpy texture can fade within six months.
  • Discomfort: You may feel sore or tender in the treatment areas. Over-the-counter pain medication is typically recommended, but Dr. Greenberg can prescribe stronger medications if necessary.

As an expert in his field, Dr. Greenberg is very familiar with the risks associated with surgery. He strives to make sure that all patients have a thorough understanding of the surgery and possible complications.

Different surgical techniques, such as smaller incisions, can reduce these side effects. Very few patients can avoid side effects completely. Make sure that you discuss any side effects with Dr. Greenberg at your follow-up appointments. If you notice any increased swelling, slow healing, or other abnormal side effects, this can indicate potential complications.

Possible Complications

While rare, complications can and do happen, and it is important to prepare yourself. Possible complications can include:

  • Infection: Bacterial or viral infections are one of the most common complications following surgery, ranging from minor to life-threatening. While the possibility can be minimized with an antibiotic regimen and attentive wound care, there is no guaranteed method of preventing infection.
  • Allergic reaction to medication: Dr. Greenberg will review your medical history with you prior to the procedure, such as medication allergies. In the event of an unexpected reaction to anesthesia or medication during surgery, Dr. Greenberg works with an experienced anesthesiologist during the procedure who can treat the complication immediately.
  • Blood clots: Any surgical procedure can disrupt blood flow and create clots, during or after surgery. If such clots reach your heart or lungs, they can be fatal. Therefore, it is important to avoid extended periods of sitting or lying down in the weeks after your procedure. If you experience shortness of breath, contact emergency medical care immediately.
  • Extended healing time: While most patients completely heal from the effects of a liposuction within one month, complications can increase healing time. It is important not to push yourself too hard, too soon in order to avoid further complications.
  • Scarring: Scarring cannot be avoided completely, but scar tissue can be reduced through particular surgical techniques and the application of recommended creams or ointments.

Other complications can also occur, including burns, fluid imbalance, puncture wounds to the organs, overly-sensitive or desensitized skin, or skin necrosis. If you notice any unusual developments, contact emergency care immediately.

How to Minimize Your Risk

While complications cannot be avoided entirely, you can take a number of steps to reduce your risk. During your initial consultation, you should thoroughly discuss your medical history with Dr. Greenberg, including any medical conditions, prescriptions, or over-the-counter medications.

The more information he has, the better he can determine how to best prepare you, or, if necessary, recommend alternative treatments. It is also recommended that you follow Dr. Greenberg’s instructions for pre- and post-operative care as closely as possible. This may include starting an antibiotic regimen prior to surgery, stopping certain medications, or quitting smoking prior to and after the procedure.

Determining Liposuction Cost

If you are considering liposuction, you probably have questions about the cost of treatment. The final cost varies from patient to patient, depending on the treatment area, the type of liposuction administered, and other factors. We encourage you to think of liposuction as an investment in your future that can provide tremendous benefits, and is worth choosing an outstanding surgeon. To learn more about the cost of liposuction, contact Dr. Stephen Greeberg’s Manhattan practice today.

About Liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical method of removing stubborn fat deposits. Dr. Greenberg offers an advanced combination of tumescent, power-assisted, and ultrasound-assisted liposuction. First, he will inject the treatment area with a special solution, which will numb the tissues and swell the fat cells, allowing him to access and extract them more easily. He will use ultrasound and a cannula (a special tube) with a vibrating tip to break down these unwanted fat cells before suctioning them out of the body. He also offers SmartLipoTM, a technique that uses laser technology to aid in eliminating unwanted fat.

Calculating the Cost of Liposuction
Liposuction is a highly personalized procedure, and therefore costs will be different for each patient. The final cost of your treatment will depend on several factors, including:

  • The treatment area: If you want to treat a larger area, such as the abdomen, it may cost more than a smaller area. However, certain areas like the face, which require a high degree of skill and expertise, may also have a slightly higher price.
  • Scope of treatment: If you choose to address more than one part of your body, this will impact the cost of your treatment. Also, the cost of your liposuction is directly proportionate to the amount of fat removed. An extensive treatment will ultimately carry a larger price tag than a minimal treatment.
  • The type of liposuction you select: Laser-assisted procedures like SmartLipo™ can cost more than traditional procedures.
  • Anesthesia: Liposuction is performed under genera anesthesia. Dr. Greenberg works with a board-certified anesthesiologist to ensure your safety.

Liposuction: A Beneficial Investment
It is important to remember that if you choose an outstanding plastic surgeon with a proven track record, you increase your chances of achieving satisfying results such as:

  • A firmer figure
  • Better defined features
  • A more youthful appearance
  • Increased self-confidence

You have everything to gain by choosing a reputable and credentialed plastic surgeon, and you should never compromise your goals in the interest of saving money. In fact, by making quality a priority over saving money, you reduce your risk of having to undergo revision liposuction or other body contouring procedures, which will cost you much more in the long run.
