What is Genioplasty or Chin Augmentation?
Genioplasty or chin augmentation is a surgical procedure to reshape or increase the size of the chin for better projection and appearance. It can balance the profile by extending the chin in relationship to the nose. To learn more about chin surgery, contact our Long Island practice today.

Genioplasty Chin Augmentation
Your Chin Augmentation Consultation
After examining you and taking your medical history to begin your genioplasty Long Island or New York City consultation, Dr. Greenberg will discuss the variables that influence the decisions involved in the chin augmentation procedure, such as the length, width and symmetry of the chin, the degree of projection desired, and expected cost. Patients with a normal dental bite, but weak or receding chins, are the best candidates for genioplasty.
Dr. Greenberg will individualize the specific chin augmentation procedure to your desires and your exact chin deficiencies. Aesthetic genioplasty typically is performed to add size and contour to a receding chin; the extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what Dr. Greenberg can accomplish with your specific anatomy.
Chin Augmentation Recovery
After your chin augmentation surgery, Dr. Greenberg will apply protective dressing to cover the chin area. You will be swollen and may experience slight discomfort and/or numbness in the area for up to two months. Medication may be prescribed to make you more comfortable. Most patients can return to work within seven days after the chin augmentation surgery and can resume most normal activities in about two weeks. Patients can start exercising a month after the surgery.

Your Chin Augmentation Surgery
Dr. Greenberg performs chin augmentation in his office ambulatory surgery centers both on Long Island and in Manhattan. Genioplasty usually is performed under local anesthesia (which numbs the area around the chin) or under a light general anesthetic.
There are two basic approaches to genioplasty. In most patients a simple chin augmentation can be performed using a chin implant. This is a simple procedure where an implant is placed either through the mouth or with a small incision under the chin. The chin implant is inserted and the patient can almost immediately resume normal activities. There is only minimal discomfort with this procedure which only takes about 30 minutes.
In rare cases it may be best to move the chin bone. In this technique, Dr. Greenberg makes an incision inside the mouth to gain access to the chin bone. The lower portion of the separated bone is moved forward and wired in position. The incision in the mouth is then closed with sutures. Since surgery is performed through an internal incision, the patient has no visible scarring. Dr. Greenberg believes in a natural look to the chin area, and matches the size and type of implant to your specific body and facial structure.
