Jaw Implants Can Improve Contours and Definition
A defined jaw can not only improve your profile, but enhance your overall appearance. By placing jaw implants, we can alter the shape of the chin, strengthen the angles of the face, and reduce the appearance of jowls or a double chin. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg can perform this procedure with exceptional precision and artistic design for both male and female patients at our Long Island, NY, practice. During your consultation at Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery, we can review your cosmetic goals, before designing a treatment plan tailored to you.
What Are Jaw Implants?
While chin implants focus primarily on the tip of the face, jaw implants (also known as mandible implants) are designed to create a more balanced facial silhouette and defined jaw contours. Jaw implants enhance the angle and ramus of the mandible (lower jawbone). Chin and jaw implants are often used together for patients with weak and small chins to provide an even stronger jawline. Jaw implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to meet your unique needs. This procedure provides excellent results and is less invasive than jaw surgery.
While this procedure is more commonly performed on men, it is becoming increasingly popular among our female patients.
Benefits of Jaw Implants
Jaw implants can improve your self-confidence by:
- Producing a more defined or less pointy chin
- Improving symmetry and create more balanced facial features
- Strengthening jaw angles
- Minimizing jowls and a double chin
- Creating smoother, well-defined jaw contours
- Enhancing your profile, especially if you have a receding chin
Our team can examine your facial structure before recommending the shape and size of the implant most appropriate. Our goal is to select an implant that complements your unique features.
Jaw Implants for Male Patients vs. Female Patients
Although we can perform this procedure on both male and female patients, often times their aesthetic goals are different. Jaw implants provide men with weak chins and a narrow jaw the opportunity to strengthen the lower angles of their face, for a more masculine look. Implants are generally placed over the chin and outer jaws, just below the ears, to create a stronger, squarer, more chiseled jawline.
Women, on the other hand, often select this procedure to eliminate jowls and a double chin. It can provide a softer, understated jawline for female patients who have a receding chin, or a more prominent jawline with aesthetically pleasing contours. While this procedure is more commonly performed on men, it is becoming increasingly popular among our female patients.
What to Expect during Treatment
After determining your candidacy for treatment, Dr. Greenberg can review your treatment plan. This can include any other facial procedures being performed in conjunction with your jaw implants, such as rhinoplasty or chin surgery. He can also explain what to expect during the procedure and post-surgical steps to follow to ensure a smooth recovery.
On the day of the procedure, we can administer anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Once you are ready, we can make small incisions inside your mouth where your lower lips and gums intersect. We can then carefully insert the implants, before gently molding them along your jawline to create the desired effect. Next, we can secure the implants in place with titanium screws. Because incisions are placed inside your mouth, Dr. Greenberg will use a watertight seal to prevent saliva and food from contaminating the surgical site. The procedure can generally be completed in about one to two hours, and most patients can expect to return to normal activities a week after surgery.
