The Rhinoplasty Procedure: What to Expect
At Greenberg Plastic Surgery, our rhinoplasty procedure provides a natural look with little to no visible scarring. To achieve your desired outcome, it is important to choose a skilled, highly reputable plastic surgeon. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg has decades of experience refining the nose, perfecting a custom rhinoplasty procedure to provide optimal results. Performed in one of his Long Island, NY-area surgical centers, your individually tailored rhinoplasty can provide a natural-looking transformation.
A rhinoplasty can have both cosmetic and functional benefits.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
At your initial consultation, Dr. Greenberg will discuss your treatment goals, briefly examine your facial structure, and explain in detail the procedure he recommends. With an artistic eye, he considers your overall facial aesthetics and features when making custom treatment recommendations.
At Greenberg Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty surgery is performed in one of our state-of-the-art, outpatient surgical centers. General anesthesia is often used, but patients have a choice of sedation options.
The rhinoplasty procedure is designed to restructure the foundation of the nose, altering the framework that gives it form and shape. If your goal is to reduce size or smooth a bump on the bridge of your nose, Dr. Greenberg can remove bone and cartilage. Some patients seek to augment the structure, building up the bridge of the nose. In this case, the doctor will take cartilage from another area of the body and perform a graft. Synthetic materials may also be used.
Types of Rhinoplasty
Whenever possible, Dr. Greenberg uses a closed rhinoplasty technique, so incisions are made on the inside of the nose. Accessing the interior structure from inside the nasal passages, the skin is lifted from above to complete the necessary modifications. With a closed rhinoplasty, you will not have exterior scars, and could enjoy minimized swelling and faster healing. For patients who seek to taper and refine the appearance of their nostrils, additional incisions may be made along the creases. When all supporting structures are reshaped, the skin is gently repositioned, and incisions are closed with sutures. A closed rhinoplasty is surgically complex, requiring specialized skill and experience, but the method offers many benefits, and Dr. Greenberg is immensely qualified in this procedure.
For some patients, open rhinoplasty is a better choice. For this procedure, Dr. Greenberg will create an additional incision across the columella, the small piece of tissue between the nostrils. The skin is then lifted from below to access bone and tissue. Dr. Greenberg is able to minimize scarring for these procedures using his advanced techniques.

For patients who suffer from impaired breathing or conditions such as a deviated septum, a septoplasty will be performed. While straightening and repositioning bone and cartilage to improve breathing, Dr. Greenberg can incorporate desired cosmetic enhancements at the same time.
Rhinoplasty patients are fitted with soft splints and gauze packing to support the nose during the initial healing phase. These are removed at your first follow-up appointment, along with any sutures. Some bruising and swelling is to be expected, but pain should be minimal and easily controlled.
You can expect to return to normal activities within a week or so. Swelling will diminish substantially after a week, and continue to gradually subside over a period of months. During that time, the permanent shape of your nose will emerge, and you could enjoy continued refinement. Once healing is complete, you can expect a beautiful, natural-looking nose that enhances and balances your unique facial features.
